It’s no surprise that men are visual people. That’s partially why I was reluctant to give up my short shorts and crop tops. I was fearful that by dressing modestly I’d lose my husband’s interest.

However, I felt called to not only respect myself more but to respect my husband and other men and women too. To be honest, I wore tinier clothes to get positive attention. I cared a lot about how people perceived me. I used my desirability as a scale for my worth.

By dressing in revealing clothes I was not loving myself or my brothers and sisters in Christ as best as I could. I was causing insecurities, temptation, and lower self-esteem to myself and the people around me.

I eventually realized putting my body on display was not making people perceive me in the way I wanted them to. The closer I grew to God the more I wanted people to see me for the love that was within me and less for appearing confident and desirable. So, I began to dress modestly.

There’s a Time for Sexy Clothes

That doesn’t mean you can’t wear sexy clothes! There’s no wrong clothing, just questionable times to wear it. Clothing is not inherently good or bad.

Proverbs 5:18-19 “Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.”

My husband loves when I wear outfits only he gets to see me in. He knows all the effort I went through to get ready was purely for his attention. He also gets to see a side of me that is only for him!

I think it’s really healthy to maintain a drive to want to impress and receive attention from your spouse after marriage. Revealing your body for only your spouse adds a bit of playfulness and added intimacy in a marriage.

Dressing down can be anything from a revealing dress to lingerie. Just have fun with it and make sure you’re confident in whatever you’re in. You don’t need a big occasion to dress down for your husband either! You can do it just because, or you can do it the next time you have a date night.

Wifey Tip: If you want to spice up your love life occasionally put something sexy on underneath your clothes before you leave the house with your hubby. While you’re still out of the house you can clue him in on your surprise. Do this, and I’m sure you’ll both be dying to get home!

Wear What You Feel Convicted to

Clothing is 100% a personal conviction. Dressing modestly might look a little different for everyone. There’s no black and white.

My personal conviction to dress modestly was to stop wearing crop tops and short-shorts. I still wear jeans with holes at the knees, spaghetti straps, and regular shorts. I feel comfortable wearing these things, and don’t feel like I’m disrespecting my self or my husband in the process.

You, however, might come to a different conclusion on what is and is not okay to wear. If you feel convicted to dress modestly, but are not sure what that looks like I encourage you to pray and seek guidance from God and your husband.

I know that changing your wardrobe and style of dressing can feel overwhelming. When I first switched to dressing more modest, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to wear trendy clothes and things that matched my style. Luckily, that’s usually not the case! A good question to present to your husband is: do you feel honored by how I dress in public?
