There are so many things I wish I would have known sooner when it comes to being a good wife and homemaker. We either plan, train or go to school for almost any other occupation. Yet, for some reason, in our culture women are not taught how to be caretakers of their home.

Of course, this is a direct reflection of where our culture places value. We see it fit to train up women for almost anything BUT being a homemaker.

However, there is a new wave of women who have the opportunity to do it all but see the most value being at home. Those women like myself may find themselves at a loss of how to start preparing for this role that is no longer commonplace.

If that’s you, here are 10 tips on how you can begin preparing for your role as a homemaker or begin improving! These are all things I wish I would have begun doing before getting married and deciding to stay home. Nonetheless, you can begin them at any point and they will be beneficial to you and your homemaking journey.

Glean From Older Women

Titus 2 teaches older women to teach younger women good things. Things like loving their husbands, kids, and managing their home.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

Titus 2:3-5 ESV

As women preparing for our future roles or trying to better ourselves in the role we are currently in, it is so beneficial to learn from other women. There are so many ways I have benefitted from purposefully making time to meet with women so I could glean from their wealth of knowledge.

I’ve had women teach me how to can food, make kombucha, sew, and give me counsel on how to deal with an entrepreneur of a husband. I’ve also saught out YouTube videos or books on home management to help me improve with meal planning, organizing, and cleaning routines. Whatever it is you would like to grow in use the people around you and their God-given talents as resources to help you grow.

Learn healthy communication

This is honestly an area where both Adam and I entered our relationship unequipped in. We both come from broken families and growing up we didn’t have it modeled how to have a healthy and loving disagreement or argument.

We have and do continue to grow in this area. Through marriage retreats and other resources, we have found some helpful outlines that can help facilitate conversations that would otherwise be too heated.

The earlier you can begin practicing healthy communication the better. This is a skill that will tremendously bless your marriage and all your relationships.

Learn to Love and Serve other people Well

Did you know there are 5 love languages? Guess witch one we tend to show others…? We typically express our love for others by how we most feel loved.

For example, my love language is quality time, so I’m most likely to show Adam love by making myself available to him and being present when we spend time together. However, Adam’s love language is physical touch and words of affirmation so he feels most loved when we are touching throughout the day and when I go out of my way to affirm him.

Recognizing other peoples love languages is crucial if you want to love and serve them well.

Learning Discipline

As a homemaker, you will be your own boss. While your husband is out of the home working it is going to be up to you to manage your time well and be productive.

The sooner you can begin the art of being disciplined the better. Coming into marriage with the ability to hold yourself accountable and create your own deadlines and to-do lists is going to allow for a much smoother transtion.

Learn Home Management Skills

Some of these skills may include, but are not limited to: Meal planning, creating organizational systems, creating a cleaning routine, sewing, and more.

Knowing these basic home management skills are such a blessing to you and your stress levels! Running a home can be stressful if you don’t have some foundational tools to help you run it smoothly. Work on growing a foundational knowledge of how to run a home and some systems that have worked for other people.

Learn How to Budget

Learning not only how to make a budget but also how to actually stick to a budget is an important life skill that anyone can benefit from. Chances are if you are a stay-at-home mom there are going to be times in life where you need to keep a budget.

There are so many great resources about creating and sticking to a budget online. Creating a budget and knowing how to actually stick to a budget are two different skills I should point out though. Even if you don’t need to budget right now, make a practice budget and learn how to grocery shop, do date nights, and more on a limited income.

It may take some creativity, coupon clipping, or even limiting what you do or get but better to learn the skill now then when you need it.

Practice cooking

Learning how to cook is not only a blessing to others, it’s a blessing to you too! Having some go-to meals you know how to make entering into marriage is extremely helpful.

Learning how to make a new recipe can be stressful, so having a few easy go-to’s can make being in the kitchen much more enjoyable.

Learn Time management

Having no boss can be freeing but it can also be daunting. When you become a homemaker you are practically unmonitored in your job.

As long as you can learn discipline and time management this is a huge bonus of the job. Your job can fit your lifestyle. You just have to make sure you understand how to manage your time properly and how much time is needed for chores to be done in your home.

Practice hospitality

It’s never too early to practice hospitality! Learning the art of making people feel loved and comfortable is such an important life skill whether you’re a homemaker or still in high school.

Pour into children or other people at your church

Last, but definitely not least is discipleship. As a homemaker and mother you will have the responsibility of introducing and teaching your children about God. Getting a head start on learning how to talk about Him and point others towards him in all different parts of life can be a really good skill to start as early as possible.

I am always so encouraged by my friends who can apply scriptural encouragement to me in almost all situations and I hope to be able to do the same with my children.
